Safety Improvement Index

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR – THE SAFETY IMPROVEMENT INDEX

Once an unsafe condition/hazard/concern is recorded into the system and the corrective action item is implemented, the software automatically calculates how much risk has been removed from the workplace, and visually graphs this “Safety Improvement Index”, for each area.

HOW IS THE SAFETY IMPROVEMENT INDEX GENERATED?

  • It takes each recorded safety concern or hazard and calculates the risk based on 3 x 5 matrix by utilizing drop down menus, one each for severity, probability, and frequency. It automatically calculates a number between 1 and 100 and that simply becomes the initial risk rating.
  • After you implement the best corrective action, it then recalculates the residual risk, if any, for the safety issue after corrective action has been fully implemented. Again, it uses the same three drop down menus for severity, probability, and frequency.
  • The difference in these two numbers is a measurement of the risk removed from the workplace.

For example, say you had a doorway from a second floor room that had an immediate drop-off to a concrete floor 12 feet below.  Once recorded into the tool, this unsafe condition, would generate an initial risk ranking of 100.  After you remove the door, or install a platform & staircase, the risk would be zero.  You now have accomplished removing 100 risk reduction points from the workplace.  Do this for about 500 points and you can reasonably expect to prevent an accident.  Very visual.  Very easy for everyone to understand.  Very real improvement.  Now you can start measuring what you want – true safety improvements.

RISK BEFORE – RISK AFTER = SAFETY IMPROVEMENT INDEX

A true proactive Key Performance Indicator that measures safe behaviors and corrected safety concerns/hazards.  Now you can measure exactly what supervisors, departments, sites, – any group – are actually contributing to improving safety!  What gets measured gets accomplished!
